By Leo Maas, Adrian Rojas, and Everett Formway-Peirce

Introduction

Do you want to know what’s in the halls of Columbus Elementary School? After you read this article you will know about 3 [Actually 6)  things in the halls of Columbus Elementary School (C.E.S.). We checked the halls K-5 to find some great things different students have done. In each section look below to the photo gallery to see the pictures.

Section One: Pride Wall

Made by Everyone in K-5 Success Now

Location: Cafeteria

Pride wall is located in the cafeteria made by everyone in Success Now. Ms. Petersen told us to draw some hearts with cougar drawings saying🖤I am proud to be a Columbus Cougar! 💜 Ms. Petersen made the idea up because she wanted people to have pride in their school. Students had been away from the building for so long, it would be nice to see some hearts and pride up in a common area.

Section Two: Fingerprints

Made by Ms. Formway’s and Ms. Vaughn’s class – 5th Location: Pink Wing.

The fingerprints are by the students in Ms. Formway’s and Ms. Vaughn’s class. The students do the fingerprints at the start of the year to show things about themselves and things that make them unique. If you were here in the halls, you would see ideas, “my dogs make me unique”, “I like holidays” and “My school is important to me”.

Section Three: Comics inspired by Eric Carle’s

The Very Hungry Caterpillar ᵀᴹ

Made by Ms. Scott’s, Ms. Rutten’s and Ms. Dain’s class – 1st Location: Green Wing

There are three different stories inspired by Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The Very Hungry Cheetah by Mrs. Scott’s class, The Very Hungry Wolf by Miss Ruttens class, and The Very Hungry Bunny by Mrs. Dain’s class. We interviewed the teachers to see why they did this project.

Q: Why did you choose to do this?

Dain: It is a first grade tradition and all people participate.

Rutten: It is a fun way to show how first graders tell a story.
Scott: The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a nice book and it would be nice to see students recreate it

Q: How did you pick the animal?
Dain: We vote on a list of ideas.
Rutten: Kids share ideas, make the list then they vote.
Scott: We voted and chose a cheetah.

Q: What did your students have to do?
Dain: They made the parts of the story and painted the paper.
Rutten:They paint paper then I give them colors and they illustrate the story.
Scott: We paint whole sheets of paper different colors, choose words, then cut it out.
