Oregon, our state, had just turned 163 years old this February, and it has accomplished a lot of stuff in all of those years. Today, we’ll be talking about the history (and much more) of Oregon.

How it was founded: In 1846, the border between U.S. and British territory was formally established at the 49th parallel – the part of the territory that was given to Britain would ultimately become part of Canada. Oregon was officially admitted to the union as a state on February 14th, 1859!

Oregon is famous for a lot of different things, especially the Oregon trail. These are some of the things Oregon is famous for.

  • Crater Lake National Park
    • Established: May 22, 1902.
    • Location: Crater Lake
  • Astoria
    •  Founded: 1811.
    • Location: Astoria, Oregon.
  • Mount Hood. Elevation: 11,249’

There is a lot of stuff that has been invented in many places. The hot dog was invented in Germany. Macaroni and cheese was likely invented in northern Europe. But, did you know that the Tater Tot was invented in Ontario, here in Oregon?  And that the Corn Dog (my personal favorite) was invented in Rockaway Beach, Oregon? Yes, all of these foods that you have at least eaten once or twice have been invented here!

In conclusion, I hope you have enjoyed this experience and that you have learned a lot about our state, Oregon, like corn dogs being invented here, and how it was founded. Also did you know that Oregon’s motto is “She flies with her own wings”? Why is Oregon’s state motto? The Oregon motto is said to represent both sentiments of independence from Britain and the independent nature of the early settlers in their abilities to make a living in the new territory and create a new government. The Oregon motto was adopted by the Legislature in 1987.    Sources: Why is Oregon’s motto “she flies with her own wings”?
