Every month, our school has a theme. Two students from each class that demonstrate the theme are awarded student of the month and one staff member is voted to be the staff member of the month. In October, Marisol Gomez, our lead office manager, was selected by staff! In some classes, the students vote on who should be student of the month. In others, the teacher chooses instead. The themes are Zest, Optimism, Gratitude, Self -control, Effective listening, Curiosity, Good sportsmanship, Social intelligence, and Grit.
ZEST means to actively participate and show enthusiasm. OPTIMISM is to believe that your effort will improve your future. It also means to look on the bright side. GRATITUDE means to show your appreciation and say thank you. SELF–CONTROL is remaining calm in tough situations. It also means to be polite to others. EFFECTIVE LISTENING means to listen to understand, then respond, and to pay attention. CURIOSITY means to be eager; to explore new and old things, and to try to figure it out. GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP is to have fair and generous behavior. SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE means to make sense of problems, have a discussion rather than an argument, and to adapt to social situations. GRIT means to try again after failure, to stay on task and to stick with a project.
If you show the character trait for the month you could get a prize; like free frozen yogurt (prizes could change over time). Each month of the school year, two students from each class get picked for student of the month. Now you know the student of month character traits!
